Papua New Guinea 1 and 2 Toea
A large Melanesian island country in the South Pacific Ocean, PAPUA NEW GUINEA has many islands, languages, and gorgeous coins with aquatic life and land-based species as dominant motifs. Two of its coins are the 1 Toea and 2 Toea. In my collection, these two coins are in proof condition, meaning they have highly polished, reflective surfaces. In addition to the proof version, the 1 and 2 Toea were also produced for circulation in Papua New Guinea. They have lost legal tender status several years ago and are no longer minted. According to the website Daniel's Coin Zoo, a Paradise Birdwing butterfly (Ornithoptera paradisea) is featured on the 1 Toea, while a Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is the 2 Toea's main design element. In the center coin image above, Papua New Guinea's national emblem is the Raggiana Bird-of-Paradise (Paradisaea raggiana), featured on the flag and on most coins.
