    Liberia 1 Dollar Coin

Liberia $1 coin, featuring a map design of Liberia

Currently in the midst of the deadly 2014 Ebola outbreak in Western Africa, the country of LIBERIA boasts many commemorative coins, some of which are colorized. One of these coins is a cartographic delight for the geography buff who collect coins! The proof coin in my collection has a $1 denomination and was minted in 1976. In addition to the map design, this coin features Liberia's 20th president, William R. Tolbert, Jr., who served as the country's leader from 1971 to 1980. Bordering Guinea, Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire), Sierra Leone, and the Atlantic Ocean, Liberia has close ties with the United States of America ever since freed slaves sailed back to Africa and formed Liberia as an independent country. Liberia's capital, Monrovia, is named after the United States' fifth president (James Monroe). There is even a county in southeast Liberia named after a U.S. state: Maryland.
