I have one banknote from COSTA RICA, a Central American country and republic located east of the Pacific Ocean, west of the Caribbean Sea, south of Nicaragua, and northwest of Panama. The currency in Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colón (₡), and its ISO 4217 currency code is CRC. Colones is the plural form of Colón. Printed in the year 1992, my banknote featured above is the 5 Colones banknote, which had this design since the 1950s but no longer circulates.
What's On the Money?
The 5 Colones (Cinco Colones in Spanish) banknote of 1992 features Rafael Yglesias Castro, who served as a young president for eight years during the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries. Two striking portraits of the Guaria Morada (Guarianthe skinneri) orchid species boast their colors to the right of Castro. This orchid species is the national flower of Costa Rica. Simply called Alegoria on the banknote's reverse side, the Allegory of Coffee and Bananas or La Alegoría del Café y Banano is a mural painted by Aleardo Villa. This colorful, port-side scene was painted in 1897 on the National Theater's ceiling. Known as Teatro Nacional in Spanish, the National Theater is located in the capital city San José.
