KYRGYZSTAN, a Central Asian nation that gained independence after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, used only paper currency until 2008, the year that it finally issued coins in denominations of 10 and 50 Tyiyn and 1, 3, and 5 Som. According to this wikipedia page, Kyrygyzstan's coins are minted at a Kazakhstan mint. Brass-plated steel makes up the 10 and 50 Tyiyn coins, while the Som denominations are composed of nickel-plated steel. Now you know more about Kyrgyzstan's coins!
