Ukraine 2000 & 5000 Karbovantsiv Banknotes
Formerly a part of the Soviet Union, UKRAINE is an Eastern European country north of the Black Sea, south of Belarus, east of Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, both east and north of Moldova and Romania, and west of Russia. It is the second largest country in Europe after the European part of Russia. The 2000 and 5000 Karbovantsiv banknotes displayed above have relatively high denominations due to immense inflation in the 1990s. The visually colorful banknotes' obverses depict a monument of the legendary founders of the city of Kiev (Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv, and Lybid). The reverses show the Sophia Cathedral in Kiev. At the time, the currency was the Ukrainian Karbovanets. Nowadays, the currency is the Ukrainian Hryvnia, which has resolved most of the inflation issues by re-denomination. For example, 100,000 Karbovantsiv became 1 Hryvnia. Click the images above to view them larger.
