    Angola 20 Centavos Coin

    Angola 20 Centavos coin - year 1948
The country of ANGOLA is found beside the Atlantic Ocean in Southwest Africa - south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, north of Namibia, and west of Zambia. Cabinda, Angola's small exclave to the north, is separated from the mainland of Angola by a very small part of the Dem. Rep. of the Congo. Angola also technically borders the Republic of the Congo, which is north of Cabinda. Like almost all African countries, Angola was formerly colonized by a European, imperial power. In Angola's case, Portugal ruled the country until Angola gained its independence in 1975. The 20 Centavos coin reveals Portuguese influences, just like the other denominations of coins minted in 1948. For one thing, the centavo was a subunit of the Escudo in Portugal until the adoption of the Euro currency. Republica Portuguesa is inscribed on the denomination side of the coin, while the date, Colonia de Angola, and coat of arms for Angola (also known as Portuguese West Africa) are featured on the other side.
