Minted by the Royal Australian Mint, the State Coin Series is comprised of $5 silver coins celebrating major anniversaries of state government operations in AUSTRALIA, the largest country 'Down Under' and the second largest in the Southern Hemisphere (just under Brazil in land area). The main feature of each design is a modernistic map element with the state's name repeated inside the state's area. 2014 marks the 25th anniversary for the Australian Capital Territory's government, and a coin has been issued to honor the occasion. Four coins were issued in 2006 for the 150th anniversary of the state governments serving New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, and Victoria. One year later in 2007, a coin was designed for South Australia's 150th anniversary; one year after that, Northern Territory government's 30th anniversary was honored on a coin. Western Australia is not yet represented in this particular coin series, but there was a coin in 2001 that celebrated the centennial (100-year) anniversary of its government.
