Probably well-known particularly in the United States thanks to the famous movie with the country's namesake, MADAGASCAR is separated from the rest of Africa via the vertical Mozambique Channel. The country's currency is the Malagasy Ariary, which has an ISO currency code of MGA. While Iraimbilanja is the official subunit of the Ariary, there are only Ariary coins and banknotes in circulation. The 1 Franc Iraimbilanja previously circulated when Madagascar's currency was the Malagasy Franc. In regards to current monetary values, 1 Iraimbilanja is worth one-fifth of 1 Ariary. There are three coins with shapes different than the typical circle. The 10 Ariary coin is a heptagon (shape with 7 sides), 20 Ariary is a decagon (10 sides), and 50 Ariary is a dodecagon (12 sides). These three coins have designs belonging to the United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which raises awareness about food security and insecurity, agricultural advancements, and more. These three coins and the circular 5 Ariary coin feature the following motto on a scroll banner:

Featured on Madagascar's state seal, this motto means Homeland, Liberty, Development.
