Iconic Coin Sells For a World-Record Price
NEW YORK CITY (Wonderful World Money Blog) — Earlier today on Tuesday, June 8th, 2021, Sotheby’s New York auctioned off a UNITED STATES 1933 Double Eagle ($20) gold coin for $18,872,250 USD! The sale easily overcomes the approximately $10 million record previously set in 2013 for a coin at a public auction as well as this coin's $10-15 million pre-auction estimate. This Philadelphia-minted coin with a Mint State 65 grade was once in the collection of EGYPT's King Farouk and is the only legal 1933-dated Double Eagle gold coin in private ownership. Two other examples are found in the Smithsonian Institution's numismatic collection. Catalogic info as well as high-resolution images can be browsed on Sotheby's website (↗).
